ICL Services

Training center

The training center had plans to put together 200 workstations operating on "thin clients" — devices that do not have their own computing power, but through which all users can connect to a common server. Having the operating system and application software available on the server would have simplified the process, allowing to download the software remotely, without the need to install it separately on each computer. This, in turn, would have simplified maintenance. In addition to that, according to the rules of information security, it is necessary to close access for downloading information from work computers and connecting external storage devices to them.

In order to virtualize workstations, the customer turned to ICL Services.

Key Challenges

  • To design and implement a computing infrastructure for classrooms.
  • To install and configure the necessary equipment for virtual desktops.
  • To organize the process of backing up critical services.
Implemented our solution

  1. During the preparatory phase, ICL Services specialists conducted several interviews with the client and clarified the technical requirements of the project. All of the classrooms were divided into four classes, with four groups of students in each class. Each group required its own application software: in particular, some computers had to run graphic editors, while others had to run on Linux-based operating systems.

Customer representatives identified the pool of software that should be installed in classrooms, while the team selected the appropriate equipment, according to system requirements and compatibility.

The specialists of ICL Services then purchased and delivered the equipment and, thanks to a wide network of partners and a high level of competence, managed to complete these processes on time. In the next two weeks, the engineers set up and configured the equipment, installed the required software, and instructed the training center employees on how to work with the new system. The full program package was prepared in advance and uploaded on flash drives due to Internet access restrictions at the customer site.

As a result, an infrastructure with 10 servers and three storage systems was implemented. The computing part is based on Vmware, vSphere, VMware Horizon products, while the backup system is based on Dell EMC NetWorker. A total of 200 workstations were virtualized; telephony was put in place.

Results

  • ICL Services specialists arranged the supply of equipment and designed the computing infrastructure for the training center.
  • The customer received a system of virtualized workstations with a single point of administration, making classroom preparation and software deployment easier.
  • Thanks to modern equipment being installed, students can use current versions of application software.
