With Microsoft discontinuing support for the previous operating system Windows 7 and new device models only supporting Windows 10, the international Japanese tire company was looking for a team of professionals capable of migrating over 7,000 workstations in 19 geographic locations to Windows 10 for 16 device models.
One key requirement was to ensure that users were able to migrate at any time. User data and settings were to be preserved as much as possible during migration. The centralized backup solution for personal data on workstations was to be replaced with cloud storage and the migration period was limited.
The ICL Services team was entrusted with this challenging project.

Key Challenges
- Organizing the migration of all user devices to the new operating system Windows 10;
- Moving user documents to OneDrive for Business for safety and easier collaboration.
Implemented our solution
- The ICL Services team developed an automated method of user migration and a solution framework for pre-assessment of devices for migration, calendar scheduling and informing users.
In the course of the project:
- Six different migration scenarios were identified and tested;
- A graphical user interface was developed to launch the device updating process. The interactive migration assistant started automatically for each user at the appointed time;
- Over 500 customer's applications were evaluated for compatibility with the new operating system. Outdated and incompatible applications were updated and/or replaced;
- All applications were repackaged in compliance with enterprise standards and prepared for automated deployment on Windows 10;
- Active Directory policies were updated to meet Windows 10 configuration requirements;
- Migration using a USB drive was ensured for remote locations.
During migration, the same set of programs was installed on each device as before the upgrade. After migration, user files were automatically synchronized with OneDrive for Business using Known Folder Move policies.
Results
- All devices were migrated to Windows 10 in just six months;
- User files synced with OneDrive for Business;
- The business application suite was updated and configured to be fully compatible with Windows 10.
