Russian Industrial Equipment Manufacturer

The project was initiated by one of the top suppliers of industrial and construction equipment in Russia and the CIS region.

The servers of the existing local infrastructure had an average lifespan exceeding 5 years. There were potential risks of complete or partial infrastructure failure. Moreover, many components lacked additional backups.

The company is experiencing significant growth, leading to an increase in the number of customers and suppliers. The existing servers and data storage systems lacked the capacity and were unable to support business expansion.

A large portion of the company's server software was based on Microsoft Windows, posing additional technical, legal, and financial risks under the current circumstances.

The company decided to pursue import substitution, leading them to seek the expertise of ICL Services.

Solution

Implemented our solution

  1. The project was initiated in May 2023. The initial step involved replacing VMware with a platform by a Russian cloud service provider. The ICL team conducted an analysis of the existing infrastructure and requirements and prepared a migration plan for the infrastructure and key business applications to Yandex Cloud.

    The most suitable method was chosen for each system, considering both labor costs and minimization of application downtime. Engineers set up the Landing Zone and network infrastructure considering both current and future needs, such as the use of an additional availability zone. UserGate was chosen as the NGFW to ensure network security and protect the critical infrastructure.

    To reduce downtime and potential configuration errors, the ICL Services team used Hystax Acura Cloud Migration, an automated solution that enables real-time migration of IT infrastructure to Yandex Cloud without interrupting application operations. 

    We optimized the operation of 1C and MS SQL Server in Yandex Cloud by selecting suitable resources, configuring disk sizes, and setting up MS SQLServer for tempdb (a separate workflow for data files, which allows for parallel read and write operations to be performed on available vCPUs); we also optimized workflow parameters in 1C.

    The team implemented backup using Hystax Acura Cloud Backup, ensuring application consistency. Moreover, additional database backups were implemented, with backups stored on a cloud-based DFS server and replicated to the local infrastructure.

    An additional DFS server was deployed in the cloud for file storage, and its replication with the local DFS server was set up. Approximately 5TB of data was copied over two weeks, with the main replication occurring during non-working hours due to varying channel widths during working/non-working hours.

    The PRTG monitoring server was also transitioned to the cloud. Once the infrastructure was stabilized, the local PRTG licenses were switched to cloud-based ones.

    The project was implemented within only 3 months.
